Sun TV have won the bid for the new IPL team
Sun TV Network wins new IPL team bid. The Deccan Chargers have been replaced by a new franchise which will be owned by the Sun TV network. They won the bid to own the team today and it was announced by the BCCI at the end of a governing council meeting.
The new owners shelled out a total price of Rs 85.05 crores an year ($15.9m) and will own the team for the next five years. This follows the dismissal of the Deccan Chargers from the IPL after failing to raise an expected bank guarantee.
A total of two bidders bid for the franchise with the PVP Ventures being the other one. They had bid a total of Rs 69.03 crores per year ($12.9m) but failed to win the bid. They were the only company that had earlier responded to an advertisement put up by the Chargers to sell off their company.
Sun TV Networks Limited is a huge media company based in Chennai and will now shell out approximately $5 million more than what the previous owners Deccan Chronicles had bought the Chargers for.
Interestingly, the base price to purchase the franchise was $56m for five years, which was far lesser than the base price to purchase the last two franchises, Kochi Pune ($225m for ten years).
